What safety precautions should a tattoo artist take when operating a tattoo machine?

  1. Instrument Hygiene: Ensure that the tattoo machine and all instruments that come into contact with the skin are clean and disinfected. Tattoo operators should use disposable gloves and needles, and the tattoo machine should preferably be made of stainless steel to ensure the hygiene of the instruments.

  1. Personal Protection: Tattoo artists should wear disposable gloves and masks to prevent the transmission of blood-borne diseases, and maintain hand hygiene to protect the health and safety of both the tattoo artist and the client.

  1. Quality of Tattoo Ink: Understand the quality of tattoo ink, and use liquid plant pigments soaked in alcohol, as these pigments are extracted from natural plants and are less susceptible to infection.
  1. Skin Preparation: Assess the skin area to be tattooed before tattooing, and do not tattoo skin that shows signs of infection. Before tattooing, clean and stop bleeding with substances like epinephrine. After tattooing, wash the tattoo with warm boiled water and keep it dry for about a week to prevent infection.
  1. Avoid Certain Substances: Do not use animal blood or cinnabar for tattooing, as this method is extremely dangerous.
  1. Wound Care: Do not treat the punctured wound with alcohol or purple medicine water, as alcohol can irritate the wound, and purple medicine water can damage the color of the tattoo.
  1. Aftercare of Tattoo: After the tattoo is completed, apply professional tattoo ointment or medical Vaseline. After 2-3 hours, rinse off the ointment and blood with warm water, and pat dry with absorbent cotton or professional paper towels. Do not apply any more medication afterwards.
  1. Avoid Scratching the Wound: It is normal for the tattoo to itch, scab, and peel a few days after completion. Do not scratch the wound to prevent infection or color loss.

  1. Avoid Swimming or Saunas: Do not swim or take saunas temporarily after getting a tattoo.
  1. Machine Adjustment: When adjusting the tattoo machine, pay attention to the stroke of the machine and the length of the needle protrusion to ensure that the needle has enough travel distance and the force of the needle penetrating the skin is appropriate.
  1. Machine Maintenance: After the tattoo machine has finished working, turn off the machine power in time, remove the tattoo needle, and disinfect the machine. After disinfection, place it in the machine's own packaging box.
  1. Avoid Needle Contact with Non-Skin Surfaces: Be careful not to let the needle touch any objects other than the skin while working. When applying ink, be sure to pay attention with the needle to prevent it from touching the ink box.

  1. Cleaning and Maintenance: After each use of the machine, wipe the contact points to prevent the generation of dirt, clean the machine body, and prevent rusting of the two magnetic points on the top and bottom of the machine.
  1. Voltage and Frequency Adjustment: Adjust the working voltage according to personal operating habits. The working voltage should be kept within an appropriate range when tattooing lines, and it can be appropriately adjusted higher when coloring and shading.

By following these detailed safety precautions, tattoo artists can provide safe and hygienic tattoo services to clients while also protecting themselves from occupational risks.
